Like the meandering Au Sable and Manistee rivers Christian Guest's career path has been a winding journey through Michigan's lower peninsula. He was raised in the suburban Detroit communities of Huntington Woods and Bloomfield Hills. Out of high school he founded a small fruit farm and winery with his father in 1978. Their 96 acre Fenton, Michigan farm was planted to wine grapes and apples trees from which Christian made and marketed a popular variety of table wines under the label, The Seven Lakes Vineyard. This business of modest beginnings achieved disproportionate success in the 80's and 90's with its wines gracing the wine lists of some of the metropolitan Detroit area's toniest restaurants.
This early success led him to create a consulting business advising others interested in investing in winemaking ventures and prompted a move to Leelanau County where he and his wife of 24 years and family reside today. He still maintains business contacts with number of Traverse area wine and hard cider operations advising and overseeing production and product design decisions. He obtained licensing as a real estate agent in 2014 to provide advice and service to the increasing number of purchasers and speculators in vineyard land to supply the expanding wine Traverse area wine industry. He continues to advise buyers of both agricultural and residential properties in the Greater Grand Traverse Region.
Chris' passion for fly-fishing began at a young age while summering at a log cabin home his father built at the mouth of the Au Sable. This avocation was furthered after his move up north through frequent stays at the Gates Au Sable Lodge where he met Rusty Gates and became a member of the Anglers of the Au Sable. Through the Anglers organization he became friends with Lance Weyeneth and began to discuss the possibility of switching his real estate focus to riverfront properties that provided access to the superlative fly-fishing of the Manistee and Au Sable rivers.
It was a decision about which Guest has said, "I only wished I'd come to years earlier. Enjoying and sharing the magnificent recreational opportunities provided in "river country" has been among the most rewarding experiences of my long life."
